About THE BARR & KAHN SYSTEM
developed by Javier Alcina
A unique teaching system inspired by a great variety of mentors, institutions & techniques.
The system combines elements from various sources such as Vasily Skorik, Anatoly Vasiliev, Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Moscow Theatre School of Dramatic Art, Patsy Rodenburg, Stanislavski, Peter Brook, Sanford Meisner, Stella Adler, Tony Barr, Eric Kline, Film Actors Workshop, James Dodding, Lesly Kahn, Lee Strasberg Institute, ENSATT & many more that were and continue to be a source of inspiration.
Its name BARR & KAHN comes from my time in Los Angeles, where I began to formulate it. Back then I was attending the Film Actors Workshop of Tony Barr, succeeded then by Eric Kline while I also took classes at Lesly Kahn studio. It was at that point that all my previous experience in England, Spain, Italy, France, Russia, China, Morocco and the US was starting to produce a certain synthesis. The system as such finally took shape during my years of work at Central de Cine in Madrid, working with students from various nationalities and to whom I am enormously grateful for their trust and dedication.
Thanks to the system, observation and listening are enhanced. Text analysis, overall behavior, internal processes, emotions and its rhythms are of central importance to honor each subgenre and the reality suggested on each page.
The work on thoughts brings specificity and nuance to the performance. It awakens the imagination so the actor knows exactly WHAT to do, surrendering to the experience and leaving HOW it happens open to the present moment.
